Hey Fellas,
I'm gonna make a riflestock [ first one],been reading up
some, but I can't find 'Toe-out' defined anywhere . It's
been bugging me. I'm sure someone here knows.
Little help someone??
Thank you

Toe-out would be having the toe of the stock angled outward a bit away from the shooter's chest. In other words the buttplate would not be perpendicular to the top barrel flat throughout it's length, but ccok outward at the toe.

Actually, cast off or cast on is a bit more complicated. These terms would involve creating it so that it is bent with the whole butt area closer or farther from the body. As I understand it, toe out is just the having the buttplate installed in a skewed manner (sort of twisted) so that the toe is away from the body while the rest of the butt is not farther from the body.

Not so?

That's exactly right. You can have cast off and toe out at the same time but they are not the same thing. Michael Yardly's book on fitting shotguns describes this pretty well. "Positive Shooting" , I believe, is the name of his book.

Yup! You're right, but you can also have cast off and toe-in. Did that by accident, guess what....works pretty good (at least for me it did).

Thanks Crackstock and all you guys that answered about the
Toe-out. Maybe I'll put a little on my stock.
