Let's hear some opinions whether it is PC for the 1700's for a hawk handle to have grooves cut in it to add grip, or were they always left smooth? Or perhaps some had deerhide strips wrapped around the handle?
 
I think its just like today, in that what ever you like your handle to look like, thats what it should. Weapons are now, and then! a personal thing.
