Here is the bag I made to tote around the things I need while on a hunt or just a day trek in the mountains. I carry some type of bag with me every day,I dont know how folks get by with out one .
A good large shoulder bag is just as important to me as a sharp knife.
I made this one out of Hemp canvas hand stiched with linen waxed thread.Leather around the button hole then whipped stiched in.I put a oil tanned soft leather strip on the lip of the main part,to hold the edge.
The hemp strap was kept short so it rides almost in my arm pit and is held down without much effort
or concern. The button is made from some leftover sheet brass and a loop for attachment soldiered on the back.it measures 14 inches deep.11 and 1/2 wide. And the cover flap is 9 inches long and has a pocket on the inside for some small stuff
I dyed It green and put 2 coats of bees wax on it then melted it into the material with a heat gun.
Bees wax is VERY VERY Flameable so you must be super careful ....just do it out side and have a bucket of water ready. All in all it came out like I wanted .Now I have started on one for my wife in Red or wine color.

I concur with your insights about bags! Time was, I tried to carry too much in my shooting bag, but it was a mess. The second bag is a lifesaver, and useful for hill walks even without a gun.

Like you I'm a one-button phreak on bags, but I hear lotsa guys insisting that 3 are better or correct or something.

Any issues with wet brush or rain and the contents in a hemp bag? I've always admired them but stuck with lined waterproof leather.

I like it and it is a bit different from the typical military ration bag ...I cannot recall what it was called offhand :idunno: I see it as a passable civy bag, rare as they were it seems a pausible represnetation for a general mid level persona which I think is the sandbox that the vast majority of us play in most of the time, I would sugest a brief explaination about what we do know of shoulder bags in the 18th century if anyone is looking at your gear, we owe it to those in the dark about such things not to give them a push down a slippery slope from the outset.IMHO

Thanks TG ,you are always polite and thoughtfull
I would like to sit by a fire some night with you
And maybe go on a long walk through your neck of the woods.Flintlocks in hand of course! As long as there are none of those nasty Injuns
around to cause trouble.
NOTE: No disrespect intended to any of our native American friends who are involved on this site.
As you can see by the smile on my Wifes face ....she like their sort and I would pay Hell if I shot one.Alright I kinda wanted to get a tan and some war paint and go play with um..Somebody gots to be the bad guys.....Right?

dark green oil based paint/ paint thinner, and some pure grain whisky .corn husks and blended fresh cut grass.some frozen peas and alittle green food coloring/ some moss from under a large stone I got down by the river.1 cup of prestone antifreeze and 1 kiddy pack of green apple juice.
I mixed it all up and let it sit for 4 weeks in the hot sun
Stunk so bad the wife threw it out .So I used Rit green dye.

I really like the coined phrase
"Totenstuff bag"
Sure takes the usual disparage of "Haversack"/"Possibles Bag"/"Shooting Bag" right out of the equasion.
I like it, I'll bet it's right handy,,

Totenstuff? I thought it was a bag for dead things like a game bag. :haha: :haha: Nice work. Let us know how well the bees wax coating keeps your goods dry.

"Thanks TG ,you are always polite and thoughtfull"
