Where in the world can I get some tow. From everything I've ever read re: colonial times it seems that this material was the common way everyone cleaned their flinters with. Everyonecarried it in their pouch or patchbox. I want some, but I can't find any!!!! Help!

Try Panther Primitives, the Log Cabin, Blue Herron Merchantile, Hamilton Dry Goods or if you've got Smoke & Fire News, there are many more listed.

I heard of this somewheres..so I tried it...macreme...a neighbor had a great big plant holder she made from the stuff you get at hobby lobby..called sisal, I believe. Well, lemme tell ya...I took the whole dang thing apart, cut it into approx six in lengths then unwound all the strands..when I had a small handfull of them I wanted to see if they would light. WOOOF! Amazing stuff. I only paid two bucks for her macreme thing and wound up with a pile of it that will last me for years.

I use macrame jute, also, for fire-making. What you have to watch, though, is that some of the jutes are treated with fire-proofing, so if it's from a ready-made that you're taking apart, see if it burns first if that's what you want it for! S
