I am contemplating getting this kit to build. I have little gunbuilding experience besides stock refinishing and a little lock tuning. My tools are limited. TOW says its a fairly easy kit and i intend to have the plug sight and underlugs installed by them. Two questions for you builders please.
1 Which type of furniture is more correct on a type D brass or iron?
2 If anyone has done this kit, could you enighten me on who difficult it is and what problems you may have encountered.
Wado(thanks)

You will find posts on these guns in the archives, generaly the parts are good but the gun in general, particularly the lock is not historicaly correct, (type D is a set of furniture style nomenclature not a gun type) for a number of reasons, if others do not chime in with the particulars, check the archives.

As TG said, those who specialize in the French guns are not happy with the locks which are offered as "French".
If you want this gun because you like the general style of it and you are not trying to make a Period Correct person happy, then go for it. :)

I would recommend that you read some of the current and past posts about building any of the TOTW, Pecatonica River, Muzzleloader Builders Supply, Chambers, or TVM. These guns are a box of unassembled, semi machined parts.
They all take hand fitting and some drilling and tapping not to mention finishing the metal and wood to suit your tastes.

The main thing you must realize is these guns take time to build. If you'r willing to spend well over 100 hours on assembling your gun, you will end up with a something that you will be very proud of.

AS I understand it, the Type D was plainer than the Type C so I will go out on a limb and suggest that the Iron (steel) might be more fitting.
(If nothing else, this might start folks correcting me so we both can get an answer.) :)

Track's kits are not really a kit, per se, but as Zonie said, a bunch of parts. The old adage "you get what you pay for" applies here. Chambers has fowlers and a smooth rifle. I've never built one, but all I've heard has been good. Track's kits are good, Chambers', better.
