What size does one use for a 58 cal northstar west northwest trade gun? I thought it would use a good size ,almost musket
size flint

Been using 3/4" X 7/8" in mine (Early English). A full size musket flint would be way too big.

Laffindog would have the definitive answer.

Dependent on lock size. I have a .62 that uses 1" to 1 1/8"rocks. So check the different sizes of flints in your lock and see what fits best.

Measure the width of your frizzen. With the lock at half cock, measure from the jaw screw to the face of the closed frizzen. Subtract 1/8". If that distance is greater than the width of the frizzen order a flint that is the width of the frizzen by the width of frizzen + 1/8".

You can also just use the width of the frizzen as the flint size. So, if your frizzen is 7/8"wide and the distance from the jaw screw is 1 1/4", order a flint that is 7/8" by 1" or a 7/8" square. Its easier to move the flint forward for length than to remove width from the flint. You can always add a small strip of leather lacing to move the edge of the flint forward or under the back edge of the flint to give the edge more of a scrape than impact.

When you order flints, be sure to state that you want flints with the top and bottom to be flat. You don't want the humped top flints.

I bought a track of the wolf NWG and a bag of flints for it. Put the gun together and stuck a flint in to fire and low I had 1/8 to 1/4 inch too long.i got a 16d finish nail, ground the point flat and tapped a u in the back of the flint. The pia of NWG is its bigger then tulle or colonial queen Ann style but smaller then bess or charley, however they are forgiving and will eat what you feed them.

These were highly prized in the 18th century and were known by the French as "Extra Fine" flints. (The ones with a hump were graded "Fine.") These were popular in the British/American colonies when smuggled in or brought in by the Dutch.

Of course when the English finally learned to knap Flints in the "French Style," between 1775 and the end of the American Revolution (depending on which source one quotes) this style flint was still the most highly prized.
