Had a great time at the tradegun match today,Shot my Northstar West 58 today with a 70 gr 2F charge under a tow wad,575 ball in a spitted bed sheet material patch,I like an easy load,no short starters for me,shot birds with 70 grains and a measure and a half of #4 ,my shoulders are blown out ( not from the gun recoil)so hawk and knife hurt like heck,I came in 6 th out of 27 shooters ,so I was happy.

no I dont get a slap from this gun,and Ive had a few that did,my 1717 belted me good and I used to hold my head way back with my bess,loved both those guns but just got to heavy and ammo hungry. I have a bear of a time trying to post ictures here.

Using No 4 is making it hard for yourself. Get a bag of # 7. (340 pellets to the ounce) Much denser pattern!

7's will do out to 40 yards for pheasants and such, Spud. Not geese and ducks though!

cant use lead for waterfowl here and I wontbother with plastic shot cups in my guns,squirrel is good enough for me :grin:

Around here, a squirrel sprinkled with 7 1/2's, can barely contain its laughter if they aren't real close. Much farther than 20 yards, they are apt to shake like dog returning from a pond and continue on their way. Tough critters with skin. :hmm:

I do not know what you blokes are using, but I have shot piles of stuff that stayed Very dead with #7's.
Partridges, pheasants, crows rabbits, and your armour -plated squirrels.
Used 7's for ducks when decoying, but not for flight shooting (pass shooting to you I think)

The above at ranges from 24 -45 yards.

There is another problem, and I don't know what it is, maybe lousy patterns??? Lousy shooting??

Where I came from we used to shoot grey squirrels with an air rifle. a charge of # 7 is much more potent.

I think you misread my post RJDH. I was discussing our regularly attired squirrels.

We call in the A-10 Warthogs for the "armour-plated" squacks.

#7 1/2 is my all-around shot in fowler, BB and even unmentionables. Have even used it effectively in shot capsules for .44 mag.
BTW, I see a lot of mentions of #7 shot. Is that a real size or just abbreviation for #7 1/2?

Maybe AZ tree rats are tougher than some but over 15-20 yds I think I'd have better luck with a pump up pellet gun. I wont hunt em with a .410 again, hardly ever recovered any. I almost always use .32 as I hate picking out shot but when I do use a scatter gun it's #4 all the way...turkey, rats, duck etc. # 4 has not failed me yet :idunno:

We have some foxsquirrels with heads like tennis balls here in michigan, mostly greys but when that big ol foxey comes around I dont want to just wound him,they got a hide like a whistle pig.
