Recently saw a gun on Gunbroker described as above. From the picture it appears to me of Pietta manufacture? What is this "Old Silver" finish? Seemed almost to look like a french grey or bare polished steel with a minimum finish? Anyone have or seen one, and comments?

don't know about Pietta manufacture, but it deffinitely looks exactly like my tradtions 1851 navy colts.... Just with a silver finish. It sure does look fine. $227 is a bit high though when the brass ones are about a hundred less.

Price was another thing, just I am not familier with the finish. I am assuming, based on what I have been able to glean from other sites listing the pistol for sale, is that it is some sort of steel, frame included, not brass but not really stainless. One called it "white metal" which conjurs up all sorts of bad thoughts, but another called it steel.

I believe the idea is to make it look like a well used gun with most of the finish worn off, bare/grayed steel. Saves them the cost of putting a finish on the gun and probably charge more for the "aged" look.

Pietta makes an "aged" finish 1851 navy as you describe. My understanding is that they actually remove the blued finish from a regular revlver using some type of oil based solvent, then age the grips and refinish. Cabela's sells them here:

but the "old silver" finish looks different. See here:

Looks like a really shiny nickel, or even a chrome finish.

Don't imagine it's very pc, but goes with hollywood (Roy Rogers, Lone Ranger, ect.)

just an opinion.....

You're right, it must have been the Pietta finish I was thinking of- but I went to Bass Pro Shop and saw the gun in question. Looks like polished stainless to me (looking at it in the display case, anyway. Store was busy and couldn't wait on a salesman to let me handle it).

"White" metal or "in-the-white" metal is just steel that hasn't been finished (i.e. blued, browned, etc.). That's what this gun looks like to me in the pics, like they just polished up the bare steel. Looks cool though.

Agreed, it does look cool. Not really pc, being a .44 navy, but still looks fun.

I was thinking with this polished steel it would look great with some poly ivory grips, who makes the best, most ivory looking ones? Anyone had good results?

White metal calls to mind the zinc based pot metal they make toys out of, or used to before plastic came along.
