Hey there. Looking to get myself a rifle in a more accessible caliber and have had my eyes on the Traditions Kentucky rifle kit in .50. Not much selection up here in Canada without some digging and I'm looking for something a bit on the low end of cost. Figure this might be a decent choice and a fun project to put together.

Kind of curious since it seems that the stock comes in two pieces. How do the two halves fit together, and is it a strong bond? And would it be possible to find a full complete stock to replace it in case of any trouble?

Also curious how well these handle patched round ball. Or just general input on the performance of these things.

Thanks!

Since its the barrel that holds the stock in place, the two part Traditions stock is strong enough. A suitable replacement stock would probably cost as much as the Traditions kit. Percussion guns have a functional lock but the springs may be a bit soft. The barrels will deliver good accuracy. Have fun.

I've been shooting a Traditions Kentucky 50cal since November. It has good accuracy. A 1:66 twist. Using 75gns fff a 490/.020 PRB. Even with minimal practice I took 2nd at a shoot in December. It was a lucky 75% built pawn shop find.

The older ones had brass pins also to hold the two stock halves together as well as barrel pins. It is plenty strong as long as not mishandled. You can buy stock blanks but they won't be cheap. The more finished they are, the more expensive they will be. Should be a fine starter kit though.
