I don't usually work on these guns, actually make it a practice to avoid them, in favor of building longrifles from a blank...but a good friend and customer of many, many years has this lovely wife who owns a Traditions Tennessee .50 cal. flinter that doesn't spark worth a darn! I want to build her a new rifle, but she won't hear it. So I said I would take a look at it.
Is there a dependable sparker out there that will closely replace the Trad. lock??? I looked all through TOTW catalog and nothing is close enough. I heard Dixie might have something. If not maybe I can put a sole on the frizzen face and do something with the mainspring.
Has anybody done this? I'm looking for IDEAS!
Thanks,
Tom C.

has a "Delux Flintlock Frizzen" (#A1721)that's an aftermrkt for the Traditons flintlocks that has a wider, hardened face for around $20
These guys know CVA/Traditions and won't steer ya wrong. (CVA's Custom shop)
No web site, phone in only,, and they're more than willing to help.

Track of the Wolf has two different L&R locks in their online catalog that claim to fit Traditions guns. They don't say specifically that they will match the Traditions Tennessee but they're probably close. I would guess that Traditions uses the same style lock across several different gun models to save money.

You could probably just replace the frizzen and mainspring on the existing lock and get it working. It'd be a lot cheaper too.

If you find you have to replace the whole lock rather than parts, I've found L&R to be quickly responsive to emails about their products. Send them a quick email before buying, in order make sure of the fit.

The L&R Kentucky replacement looks like the same dimensions and far better quality of course. Track doesn't show these in my #17 catalog, maybe their new one does. It appears to be pre drilled for lock screws...that worries me some, but I know how to solve those problems.
Thanks for the tips! :v

Well, TOW does show these RPL locks in my catalog. I just had to thumb past all them new fangled percussin locks. looks like it will work with a little shaping & fitting.

Because I am frugal (my wife says cheap) I would put a sole on the frizzen. Recently treated an old Dixie lock to a new band saw face and it sparks like the dickens.

I have a traditions flintlock .50 cal flintlock pistol that I built years ago, it was never a good sparker out of the box....bought some Kasenit from TOTW and followed the directions, sparks much better and fires every time

The L&R RPL lock arrived yesterday and it will fit after some minor remodeling. But the lock itself was pretty much assembled "as cast", so like most other locks it will have to be pulled apart and EVERY part needs polishing! Not the same quality I am used to from Chambers locks.

That is not at all like the L&R locks I have purchased. They have been beautifully finished and polished inside.
Maybe since this is a sorta gunsmith item they leave it unfinished. I dunno. :idunno: Jset speculating.

I would re sole it with a piece of razor blade. So thin you will hardly be able to see it. I epoxied a piece of single edged razor blade onto a soft frizzen three years ago and it's still sparking.
