Don't know if this should be here or over under trekking. I remember somebody mentioning the use of boxed mince meat for trail rats. Finally saw some in a store the other day. I just don't remember if it was eaten straight from the box (kinda pricey) or as a base for pemmican-type product or?? Anybody here remember?

Thanks,

-Riley

Wait a minute. This isn't the stuff they make pie with is it? It's actually minced meat.

Originally, "mince meat pie" had meat and fat in it. Today's mince meat pie is fruit - no meat. Unless, of course, you make it yourself from an old recipe. Mmm, good!

I can remember the old mince meat pies, actually had meat and tallow in them. Pretty tasty mukluk they were too.

In my grandmother's house it was sweet meats.... nuts, along with suet. But wikipedia gives this:

Yep, got my wife to make it for me -once. An old recipe that used venison.

I just know I had seen a post on usin it for trail snackin, but can't remember where.

As to what is in it (this is the None Such brand-it says "classic original", don't know if there is something else):

Ingredients: Raisins, Brown Sugar, Dried Apple, Dextrose, Water, Salt, Beef, Corn Starch, Dried Citrus Peel, Apple Concentrate, Spices, Distilled Vinegar.

I grew up on mince meat pie. My mother, and her mother and grandmother made it regular. It had meat and spice and apple, raisins, and other fruit in it. It sure as hell didnt have any tallow in it though.

Good stuff as I remember it. I havent had any for close to 35 years.

The old stuff must have been a lot better than what they call mince meat pie now. It's almost as nasty as fruit cake. :shocked2:

Agreed, fruitcake has the shelf life of a Twinky, at least 20 years, if you don't peel the wrapper or open the can, 40 years minimum.

I agree with you, 3 or 4 thousands years
from now when they study our civilization, they won't know weather to eat it or make a building
from it. I'm sure it could be used for both :rotf: :rotf:
snake-eyes :hmm:
