A while ago Jethro had put on a very nice tutorial for a shot bag. Shortly after that I decided to try and use this as a pattern for a belt bag, a little smaller than the shot bag.

Well work and other stuff came in between and the cut out pieces just lay around on the bench.
Finally I got around and put it together.

What do you say?
It's brain tanned deer hide.
Just need something to finish it with, probably tallow/beeswax or what else could I use?

Thanks for looking Silex

 Nice looking bag you got there. I would use some Sno-seal(because I have a tin of it)on the leather to treat/water proof. I also use Stumpy's Moose snot to treat my moccasins and other leather goods. Find the recipe here on the forum.
A little treatment and some patina and that bag will look FINE.

I'll echo flattail's suggestion of Sno Seal. It's made of beeswax, but it's easier to apply than straight wax because it doesn't need to be melted.

Nicely done!

My favorite for treating leather is the same thing I use for patch lube, Track of the Wolf's Mink Oil Tallow. I started using it because I was getting it on my hands while shooting, then getting it on the bag as a matter of course. Seemed reasonable to cut out the middle man and put it right on the bag. Sure works great.

That is really nice. I am in process of brain tanning a couple of deer skins, have not made a belt bag yet, I'll have to try one like that. I treat leather with Kiwi "mink oil" or snow seal, depending on temper and use. Both work well. :hatsoff:

Thanks everybody!
It had a lot of fun stiching it together.
I'll try the mink oil on the next bag, since I use it for patch lube, too.

Well, this bag went to a new co-worker.
We were talking about history and black powder and all that stuff and of course about leather working - he seemed really interested.
I brought the belt bag to work to show him and on a whim decided to give it to him.

Who knows, maybe he'll get around and I can interest him in some flint lock shooting next year...

Thanks again Jethro for the tutorial.
Merry Christmas everybody,

Silex
