Hi all,, got a ?,,, Is triple 7 powder hotter then fff and/or ff ??

k,, I Loaded up my powder horn with triple 7 before I went out and I had some fff still in it,, I got my new 1 in 66 twist for my Hawken 50 cal and the first 2 patches were just fine,, but then ALL the rest were burnt to a crisp,, So I was thinkin ,,,, could it be that the triple 7 was to hot ??? I am usin 100 gns. Tried 90 but didn't like the pattern as much and they were burnt also,,

777 will smoke a patch like nobody's business.
You have to use hornets nesting or a wad to protect your patch.
Probably better off using it for fire starter and going back to BP.

Triple 7 comes in 2F and 3F grades. 3F, for example, gives more velocity than Goex black powder 3F. I have found that I have to use a hot shot or spitfire nipple, but I don't think magnum primers add anything. Also, it requires a thick patch. An over powder wad as suggested may let you use your regular patching. It is a very good powder.

I only used Goex, but at work we have one plastic bottle of Triple Seven along side the Pyrodex. Anyway, if I remember right of what I read in small print on the T7 bottle, it said that it was prone to chemical break down over shelf life. Could this be the reason for blown patches I wonder? :hmm:

Thanks's all,, I was hopin it was the t7, I'm goin back to fff pyrodex and sea (x-navy) what happend's,, Thanks again,,,,,,

Ya know, back in the early 80's I got my first black powder rifle.. it was a 45 T/C Hawken kit and I REALLY liked it,, If I would of had chat boards like this one and other's, I wonder where I would of been now, I'm on 3 boards, and you all are great !! The info is there and you all take the time to share it,, For that.... I thank you,,, JW

I always use an over powder wad in my .54 with 777 in 3f and no trouble with patches.

over powder wad ?? explain please,, I am usin .010 (i like em best) and .015 dry and I use bore butter on em,,

One thing I GOT TO SAY bout T-7,, is that it DOES leave my barrel cleaner after a few shots,,

Hobbles,
It is just a felt wad placed over the powder and then your PRB. I lube mine with stumpy's moose snot. You can buy them pre-lubed or plain. I make my own. I have a punch and felt.

Ohio- No, it comes that way. Bruce Hodgdon sent me writer's samples of Triple 7 in 2F and 3F, and it burned patches. In their loading data, they showed .020 OxYoke patches used. An over powder wad can even be a wadded up patch, whatever you use, put down over the powder before your regular patched ball.

Interestin,,, huh ,,,,
