I watched some good 'ol boy down a mule deer on a canned hunt on one of those huntin' shows today. He was hunting with what he proudly proclaimed was "a muzzleloader" - a scoped Omega taking a shot at 175 yards, dropping the muley. This got me thinking - why have I not seen a T.V. show dedicated to traditional muzzleloader hunting? Oh' sure, I have seen the rare occasion when some poor sap with a cheap flint lock just out of the box, brass still so shiny it glares the camera, drop a deer over a pile of corn in a 40 acre field of Biologic somewhere, but other than those pitiful examples, I see nothing about traditional muzzle loading hunting on any of the "hunting" channels. Seems to me there would be a lot to cover should someone do this - not only the hunting, the making of, shooting how to's, shooting competitions, re-enactments, you name it, there would be a lot of material here. evenin,, I understand what you are sayin,, but what is wrong with keepin a weapon clean ??

I believe selected TV programming is simply what the marketing folks forcast will sell best to the general public, and what advertisers there are that are willing to fund the programming.

I think that the number of people today who shoot any kind of rifle that loads from the front are miniscule compared to all hunters in general.

And I think of that miniscule group, at least presently, the big money advertisers are the manufacturers of inlines and related products and have a vested interest in funding such programming.

I believe the old saying is true: just follow the money

Keeping it clean is one thing - hunting with a flinter with the price tag and warning lables still on the stock is another!

Shiny brass doesn't bother deer...movement and scent are the concerns...I keep the brass on all my flintlocks showroom ready...can see my teeth in it...looks good in the photos with the deer

When Jim Chambers or Track of the Wolf start mass marketing and sponsorship of shooting shows you might see it.

Right about the time the Eric Ketteburg/Allen Martin sponsored NASCAR takes to the track.

Those shows have gotten to be infomarcials.

"Brought to you by Tom Fuller's English Flints"

Yep, I'm sure Tom Fuller sells enough flints in America to sponsor a 30 second ad. Watch the Brady Bunch & MMM try to shut him down and limit the stocking of rock piles.

Fed. Code of Regulations, Title 18, Section 1776: (A)(1) No person shall have more than twenty flints of any size or more than one nodule in their possesion without a license from the Dept. of Geological Services.
(A)(2) Persons or parties found guilty of violating the above shall be fined no more than $1,000 or imprisoned for one (1) year or both. :eek:ff:

Ha JR the brass on my TC hawken hasn't been shined up since 1975---and you should see the nice patina on it. Just like the solid brass door locks in Williamsburg VA.--beautiful. Not a speck of dirt or rust anywhere on this rifle either----it's CLEAN and pretty. :m2c: :imo:

Hmmmmmmm. Maybe somebody should get the attention of the 'History Channel' and tell them about things like Dixon's or one of the fine rondy's going on accross the country.

Ya know, it would be interesting to see if the 'Gunney' would be interested in seein' how a barrel is rifled by hand.

We have a lot of talent on this forum, maybe we should be a bit enterprising?

Very good question as to why we dont see tradtional muzzleloaders being put on tv hunting shows.
THe main reason is that the people making the shows are trying to suck up to various companies to get free or discounted equipment. Few companies want to send out say a 400 dollar fullstock rifle in flint or percussion. But they dont care about an inline that only costs 20 dollars to make.
And another reason is the modern magnum fetish that is only met by inlines with the advertised "150 grain MAGNUM charge, 340 grain hollow point bullet in low friction breakaway sabot, with 2000 feet per second velocities at 200 yards".

And the only telivision program that had traditional sidelocks is Fred Trosts Practical Sportsman. Its an old old show, started in the 60s by another guy. Dont know if anyone outside the kent county area of michigan can view it (PBS Show).

If I am not mistaken...the Gunny has had at least part of one of his episodes that dealt with muzzle loading.

Sad to say..I do believe the money thing is what drives tv today. Any advertised product from any producer on tv not only bombards one with hype..they literally tell people what they need! Sheesh, so much for the interests of the general public, but then..the vast majority today is so brainwashed they wouldn't know or care.

maybe someone should contact tred barta....i bet this guy would do a trad muzzleloader hunt....he just had a show on that he went after wild pig with a knife....when he does a bowhunting show it's by long bow....he even did a show on goose hunting with flu flu's out of his bow fer geese..............bob

There is no hunting or shooting of any kind on regular cable tv anymore..not in the Orlando area anyway..nothing but fishing for over a yr. now.

That ain't right, downright un-American! No hunting shows - not P.C. I guess. I bet that cable system ensures you got a full selection of all the porno you want don't they! There is no cable where I live so I must go with a dish or nothing. Dish Network carries the Outdoor Channel OLN and the Men's Channel (which should be called the hunting channel), might be worth checking into in your case.

How about that show "Made in America" that's on, I think Discovery Channel? Worth a suggestion. :imo:

Some day that boy is gonna get pulled outa Tred's boat, by a big fish, then we won't have to watch his shows any more. :blah:
