I read a post here with lots of information on the Hawken, I hope that there is some information on the Tryon rifle. I have a friend who has two original 1830's rifles with Tryon on the lock. I maintain that Tryon probably supplied the parts and they were put together by other smiths, he maintains they are a product of the Tryon factory. What he calles the chief's rifle is most interesting. About 49 caliber. No underrib, one thimble, one wedge. buckskin repair and lots of brass tacks, walnut stock. Any good information or can you direct me to a good read? Doug

This quick note extracted from"The Plains Rifle" by Charles Hanson, Jr. George Tryon had several Indian Bureau orders, including a massive 1000 gun contract. He also supplied rifles to others, such as Pierre Chouteau & Co.; 100 in 1850, 120 in '54. He apparently made some Northwest style guns for the trade. Tryon made their own contracted rifles, but also provided lots of parts to "backwoods gunsmiths". Probably take an expert to determine if the two rifles were Tryon or assembled from Tryon parts.
