The advantage of a tube sight or a shade was that it eliminated any heat waves rising from the barrel, provided shade for the sight so there's no distorted sight image (sun on one side can throw your aim off as you center what you see against the target). So, when were tube sights or shades first introduced on rifles? By inference Ned Roberts believed that references to telescope sights prior to 1800 were really tube sights (see page 180). So, when were the first tube type sights or shades introduced?
