I tried using the search option, but I am a little slow I guess because I cannot find what I am looking for.
I am trying to find out how to weave a correct tumpline. I can do the diagonal weave for the ties, but I can't figure out how to do the center part of the strap. I have seen something about a 8 strand braid for the center strap, but cannot find any useful info on how to do that weave/twining. Can anyone direct me to a post or a website. While there is still close to a foot of snow on the ground I thought I could do this as an indoor project in either jute or hemp.

Find "fingerweaving" or do a regular weave in the center. I would recommend hemp over jute. Made one out of jute and it is already starting to fray after a couple of years of light use (use it for my matchcoat).

Can I ask what a regular weave is? Is it a chevron or does it have a specific name I could look it up on the internet with?

You can finger weave it just like a 3 stranded weave that girls use for a pony tail, just use 8 strands or, cut a leather strap the size of a mans belt and attach rope to each end, Or inkle weave a strap or make a strap out of canvas or....
I use the leather strap method and it works real nice.

I am up in Alpine. Still have a lot of snow on the ground. Thanks for the website. I am trying to figure out how to do the twining for the center part of the strap. Not a lot of info on the web about that part of the construction of the tumpline.

Think "looming" with warp and weft. The one I am making has the center strap twined around the long pieces that extend the length of the tumpline (that will eventually be braided into the "tails").

Twining is something like wrapping in a figure-8 around the long pieces to trap them...

Ok I think I am following you. I do a Seneca weave or a Iroquois weave with just 2 or three warp strands for my powder horns. I can just increase the width to 8 to 10 strands and then go to a diagonal weave on the ties.

Ok on the left is a powder horn I am working on and on the right is one that is complete. The one on the left has 4 warp strings and the one on the right has 3.

Now I just need to see how to transition from say an 8 strand weave down to 2 strands that I can use the diagonal weave on for ties. I will let you all know how it goes.
