Good day gentlemen, I wish to make a woven tumpline as part of my F&IW Milice gear, and am not sure how to start. Any advice would be most welcome.

That is very helpful, thank you. That is my next project sorted; I have just finished my oil-cloth tarpauline, and now I will be able to make the tumpline to carry it with.

Doc, you may want to do more research on this matter of carrying an oil cloth. I believe you will find that there is little to no documentation for it. A blanket, yes, but for rain, the wool blanket or a makeshift natural shelter, or rockhouse. Oil cloth to protect goods in travel, but not so much as personal protection. Check it out for yourself, as I am no expert on the matter.

You might want to double check and make sure that that is the proper type of weaving to use for an eighteenth century tumpline - I was under the impression that fingerweaving was the method used for such things. I could easily be wrong, of course...

Well I actualy posted a couple links but one of them may have been a violation, :idunno: . As far as the quality of the links again :idunno: , they are straight from google.

you may want to check our neumanns collection of rev war stuff.they have drawings of tumplines.. they are pretty easy , hemp or jute wide strap, lenght to your taste, then wrap blanket around it tie off with leather or some other material around blanket.. carried my blanket in one on my march into trenton,,rather comfortable...

I have used a tumpline in my younger days. It consisted of two long strips of leather sewn to a leather head strap. I took sometime to get used to, but when you could use it properly you could carry a tremendous load.

There is a video on YouTube. It is under Dave Canterbury's channel, wildernessoutfitters. Crit'r did it. He made a 19 foot one with split ends out of jute twine. Very interesting. He explains how he started and shows the different weaves. I think you can also search YouTube for tumpline and it will come up.
