A cheaper alternative is a standard tapered fluted reamer. You can find one in a good hardware store. A little steeper taper, but you can scrape the tuning peg to match in a few minutes. Well, I can, anyway.

Hi again Paco....... :) As I recall, I purchased mine from a local machine shop supply store. So long as you know the degree of taper that you want, they should have it. I purchased mine about 3 years ago and I seem to remember that it was around $12. You will need a tap handle to use it. Do not use it in a drill or a drill press. It must be done by hand and its a stop and go operation with continual fitting of the peg until you are satisfied with the fit. Hope this helps. :) Good luck ...... Wolf

You know what thats a good ideal! Should be around a N0. 4 or 5 taper pin reamer that would work out.

I've tried a tapered round file; very hard to get an even taper. A reamed cut is even all the way around; takes a few seconds.

This may sound crazy but the last couple I reamed out I just used the tang end of a large file. Took n sharpened up the edges of the tang just like ya do on a scraper n slowly twisted it around for a bit until the peg fit nice n snug.oh yea I turned the plug first to match the taper on the tang if that makes sense. cost me zip n I get to use the file like its supposed to be used too sort of double duty. I like it when I can use tools n such for more then one thing. YMHS Birdman

They're available in the Grizzley tools catalog, or on line. I think about $15. As has been said check Ebay, search under Luthier's tools, or google that. Luthier's are string instument makers, in case you were wondering. :hmm: Bill

If you decide to go with the fluted taper pin reamer, get the #6. It pretty much duplicates the taper of the violin pegs and is the right diameter. It may be a little long, depending on the curve of the horn, but it can be shortened. I use one on all my horns.
