I’ve really been bouncing back and forth between a 20 & 24 gauge for my smoothie. Will basically be used as a turkey gun, but won’t be scared to use it on small game either. While I’m pondering the the decision, let me see your gobbler guns and the details on them!

Mine is a Joe Schell 12 ga southern iron mounted smooth bore that has been jug choked by Danny Caywood. It has taken a few longbeards an tree rats an a couple of deer in its time. 32 inch colerain oct to round barrel Chamber round faced english lock. Slab sawn sugar maple with a tad of curl in the stock. Gun is very light an handy in thick woods an thickets.

I was under the impression you couldn’t shoot RBs out of a jug choked gun?

Round balls are perfectly fine to shoot thru jug chokes. Ive heard the same thing on this an other forums an can tell you its just not true. Danny Caywoods web site explains it much better than I can.

For turkeys mine is a 12 as well with a 38" jug choked D weight fowler barrel. I would go big for turkeys, it you want a 20ga turkey gun I would go with a Colerain turkey choked barrel, you can't shoot round balls out of these barrels.

To dispel the myth of " you can't shoot round balls out of a jug choked barrel", here is one of my 25 yard targets that I shot with .690 balls that did poorly and .700 balls that did great.

I made my gun, it is light and gets the job done.

Do your state game regulations allow for a 24 gauge? Some states have minimum gauge requirements.

In Kansas, the only requirements for modern shotguns, muzzleloading shotguns, choked handguns or choked muzzleloaders is that the barrel must be at least 10” long and you use shot size 2-9.

Both 20 gauge,

Centermark Fusil des Chase and TVM "Early Virginia" smoothrifle.
Usually load 1 1/8oz #5 shot over 70 grains powder, loaded Skychief style, for turkeys.

Wattlebuster, I like the way you did your hat. I use my 58 ga/24 cal trade gun with a mix of 5 & 6 shot for turkey and squirrels. It’s a light gun that you can carry all day too. Sometimes I’ll bring my trade pistol. It’s the same ga/cal as my trade gun. (For VERY close shots and haven’t got anything yet with it). Sometimes I try to use a wing-bone call, but it’s hard to make a good sound. (For me anyways)

I’ve seen some Dan Caywood guns that were very nice. I know he sells kits with fowlers. He has a website. Type in Caywood Flintlocks on your Google search and it should be the first thing to pop up

I just checked the Pecatonica River site, and they list the Colerain Turkey choke barrel in their list of smooth bored barrels.

I am sure that they would work with @Flint_Primer to assemble a collection of parts for a suitable kit.

Jim Chambers would also be a possible source for a kit to build a fowling gun. They would possibly jug choke the barrel so a round ball could also be used. It is worth the call.

This is from a Kibler colonial .58/24 smoothie at 27 paces.
80 gr Swiss 2F and 1 1/4 ounce of copper plated #5. I have full confidence in this gun for turkey hunting. Round balls shoot well too. But if given the choice I’d probably lean towards 20 or even 16 gauge for a dedicated turkey gun.

You’ll have no regrets. I have both rifled and smooth barrels for the 58. The smoothbore can shoot round ball better than I can inside 50 yds. Have not tested it further. I’m also very happy with the tight pattern of this gun as well. I know it will be a fine turkey gun but…… ultimately in the end I will probably build Kiblers Fowler kit and make that my dedicated smoothie and leave the rifled barrel on my Kibler Colonial. I have his rifled .58 and it’s the best muzzleloader I’ve ever shot!

I have been looking hard at the Kibler .58 calibre smooth rifle…so much so, that I’ve already bought the wads for the gun…so yeah, I have issues.
