I finally managed to get a turkey today. I went out about 2:30 this afternoon to a spot where i had seen them before. Set out my hen decoy and settled in and started to call. Had a tom gobble from about a 1/4 mile away or so. Then had another one start a few hundred yards away. Kept it up for a while then stopped. I had a hen show up take a look at the decoy and leave. So i figured ok, i been using this decoy(Flambeau) from the get go and no luck, so maybe there is something they don't like about the decoy. So i went out and removed decoy and after a while called some more. About 4:10 i had a group of 9-10 come in and there were 2 nice toms in the bunch. But they had come in from a direction i wasn't expecting them from and i had to move to be able to shoot. With 9-10 pairs of turkey eyes watching my move did not go un-noticed. The toms kept in the middle of the bunch of hens and i could not get a clear shot at one of them before they were gone. So i sat there a while and started to call again. Ohh by the way, i was using the new call that member PitchPine just sent to me for most of the calling. About 5:15 i had another group of 4 come in, 3 hens and a tom. Again, no shot available. So i sat there and about 6pm a jake came in alone. Him i shot, naturally. He isn't very big, but for such a small bird had a 7" beard. Heres a pic, and yes that idiot in the Period clothes with the new Bobby Christian smoothbore is me. And i still have the flint in it that i put in when i first got the gun. It has over 80 shots on it now, and worked just fine.

ATTA BOY REBEL! CONGRATS! turkey with a new smoothie! still smilin is we? soooo, them new "old" clothes is so good ya don't even need a decoy? hmmm, interesting! nice stragedy! RC  :hatsoff:

Good on ya Rebel!
You went after a turkey with a Flintlock and made it all happen...Tom, Jake, big, small...doesn't matter...congratulations!
:hatsoff:

Thanks for the kind words guys. The load was 70 grs of Goex 3f, 4 thin overshot cards, a paper index card shot cup long enough to hold 7/8 oz of shot, 1 1/8 oz of #5 lead shot, and an overshot wad. Range was right at 20 yds.

Congratulations, Rebel. I am betting he will be fine eating, and tender, too. Any turkey killed with a flintlock is a trophy, and that 7 inch beard is not bad at all! :hatsoff:

Thanks Paul. We have tried a jake, an old Tom, and a hen. The hen and jake were good, but the old tom left a lot to be desired.

nice bird just a nice bird ya got there, i'll be hoping to git one with my bow :v ............bob

Thanks Bob, I think i will try to take the next one with my bow. I hadn't shot it in over 3 years, but got it out yesterday and fired about 20 arrows through it and then again today. If i limit my shots to 20 yds it will be fine, and so will i. I have never taken any kind of animal with a bow, so it would be a first for me. Good luck on your hunt.

Guys: ( Rebel and White Buffalo: If you are going to use an arrow on turkeys, you risk the animal flying off and dying somewhere out of sight. But, you can find a product called a " Game Getter " I believe, a little stamped metal star shaped device that fits on the shraft of your arrow behind the broadhead. If you turn them around so that the stars face forward,
they will act as a brake, knock the heck of any bird hit, but prevent the arrow from passing through the chest of the bird. With the arrow through its body, the bird can't fly off.

My best friend used them on a hunt back in 1983 near Crossville, Tenn., where he arrowed two separate birds on two consecutive days. He retrieved both of them. The man who ran the hunt club where this hunt took place was with him to see the shots and the effect of the " game getters " on the birds. He bought every one of them that Don had in his tackle box, including both of the ones that had already killed birds. He told us that he would no longer allow archers to hunt turkeys on his property unless they used these little devices. They left about a 12 ga. diameter hole in the chests of the birds, BTW. Didn't destroy much meat, but really knocked the birds off their feet.

Good hunting to you both.

Awesome Rebel and a big grats on getting that fine turkey. :hatsoff:
Glad that call worked good for ya. :)

I have another bird to take and if i wanted to buy another $18 tag i could get 3 altogether. But $18 is a bit much for another turkey we don't really need. Especially when i figure in the price of the gas to go look for one.

Fine bird, Rebel!!
Congratulations! :hatsoff:

Here's a link to a recipe I posted a while back:

It works great on everything from jakes to old gobblers. :winking:

Hey Paul .. who makes the Game Getter arrow attachments? :hatsoff:

Davy

Hey Davy... Paul's description sounds like these: Adder Points - I can't remember for sure (I'm at work and they're at home!), but I think they weigh 25 grains - I think I used a 75 gr. broadhead with them for turkey (normally shoot 100 gr.). I only ever got a handful of feathers to show for hunting turkey with a bow! Called a gobbler 100 yards across a field... drew while crouched down behind a log (felt like 100 lb. pull!) - holding at full draw for what seemed like an eternity! Great heart-pounding hunt, though... all the fun without the work!

Rebel: Many Congrats, again!!! :applause:
