The two boxes were turned from thick pieces of horn that allowed the bands and steps to be added. The one horn retained a white color and looks like china. The other became translucent and looks like old glass. The wood parts were turned from cherry.

I am always in admiration of your turned horns.
As a turner, I should try to emulate. Kinda shamed I haven't yet.
Mind telling your sanding and polishing procedure?
I know going cross grain on horn is tricky.

and click on the "tutorial" section. I don't think you need to be a member to do that. I posted a step by step series showing how to form and turn the horn segments. If you've rounded horns, particularly if you've used 350 degree lard, the process is pretty simple.

I discussed that with some experienced horners and they all said to use lard. I keep mine in the Fry Baby between heatings. It's about three years old and still works fine.

Everybody likes what works best for them! .. I use the cheapest no-name brand of cooking oil and it works fine and doesn't go rancid. I do clean my Fry Daddy and run the oil through a coffee filter every few months.
