with the good feedback i got from folks i ordered a tvm southern rifle. flint of course, with iron. the folks at tvm have been a pleasure to do business with as i was told they would be.the only downside so far is gonna be the six month or so wait.oh well got plenty of time to get the rest of my gear back in order after its been sitting idle for 4 yrs.

Congrats on the new rifle. From what I've read on the forum about those rifles ,you'll be vry happy with it. We want to see pics whn you get it though. Andy

will do. havent decided on a stain color yet any suggestions would be appreciated.

Both rifles I ordered from Matt came in early. One was 2 months early from his quote.

I just got my Leman last week. I sent them a pic of what I wanted and they got it right. I have no idea what they used on it. You'll love yours I'm sure.

I deffinitely want to see pics of that when you get it. I've had my eye on that one as well. The Virginia I ordered arrived at my doorstep 4 months from the day I ordered it. They told me a 4-6 month wait after I ordered. I was nothing but pleased with their work.

 Matt and the rest of the TVM family do a super job for their clients. Got two from them a few years back. First was a .36cal and the second was in .50cal. Both Lancaster's one early and the other late. Quality is excellent attention to detail is second to none. I would recommend them to anyone. Vern

man that is a beautiful rifle. have you fired it yet? please let me know how hard it is to get the sights right.

I predict you will enjoy your TVM Southern as much as I do mine. I really like this style, too.

I was looking at the Leman first and Toni suggested the Southern over the Leman since I was going to use it for competition. She said the curvature of the butt-stock and it's thickness would be a hinderance.
How does your Leman feel to your shoulder? Do you a pic of the top of the stock so I could see the thickness?
I think anything from TVM is a great buy.
Thanks!

i would sure like to see a picture of your southern hanshi. i am still trying to decide on a finish on mine. i sure like the finish on mikes leman, its a fine looking rifle and he said he ordered p+ wood which is what i ordered. imho it looks more like p++ or better.

Six months is a small price to pay. For most custom guns you would be looking at a year or more.

wow- nice looking rifle!

as regards the stain, i'm partial to a honey walnut with reddish undertones, so i tinkered with a mix of the two (Laurel Mountain Forge, alcohol based stains- easy to use, good reliable color, and you can 'cut' them with plain old rubbing alcohol so they don't get all nasty and streaky on you)... used the barrel channel as a test (take notes: don't rely on memory as to the mix you used.)

good luck in your build.

I need to post some pictures and will take some photos of my Southern to post. I'm computer illiterate and will have to ask my wife to help and she's out of state as I write this. Bear with me and I'll see what I can do.

WELL you can't be that bad..
you are online..
Take some pics with a digital camera.. upload to computer.. then go to photo bucket.. sign in.. upload them to the "internet"
From there you are golden..
click on that funny icon on this page..
I always thought it looked like an envelope
Guess it's a mountain with a red dot :surrender:
try a few time and then we can see PICS

Been torn between the Leman or a Virginia in kit form from TVA..But recently have been seriously been looking at the southern by them..Not real keen on the LR lock the Leman would havecompared to the Siler the other two have plus no additional upgrade cost..I would rather putting that to the deluxe siler upgrade or into a step up in wood grade..Barrel length got me wondering on balance..More than likely the straight barrel will be my choice also in .58..I shoot a 33" .50 in 15/16ths now with a solid brass ramrod and am very comfortable shooting it in woods walks and mettalic shoots. The standard 36 and 42 inch lengths have me wondering how long I can get away with without getting to heavy.I can loose the brass ramrod, most likely will on this gun..LOL,just thinking out loud with my ramblings,,Would love a swamped but can't swing the 200 upgrade ..Southern may get the nod but love the look of Burnsies Leman..Like to see some more pics if anyone has any of southerns and Lemans.Ray

I have been thinking about a southern myself. I'd like to get a .40 and maybe a chambers late ketland on it. With all the options its hard to decide, especially since you are buying something you can't try out until you get it. But I have a TVM virginia in .54 that I bought used here awhile back and its a fine rifle so I know it will be good if they make it, or they will make it right if its not. I have also thought about a southern in a .58 so if you get one let us know what you think. Dew

If you can, please wait for a little while longer and save for the swamped barrel. The experience in how the guns handle, is night and day. If you really want to enjoy the features of the style of these guns, please wait and get the swamped barrel. A gun can bring a full lifetime of pleasure. Don't rush into a lifetime of wishing you had waited, because once you handle the swamped barreled gun, you will see what I mean.

I handled one in 50 cal with a swamped barrel, it was very nice handling. When I get a rifle, it will have a swamped barrel. They are well worth the extra $.
