Well I want a barrel, .54 or .58 caliber, that is a 1:48 twist or some other twist that is a good compromise between roundballs and conicals. Id like to shoot both.

Seems green mountain doesnt make a faster twist barrels in either one of these calibers.

What are my options here? Settle for the slower twist that green mountain makes? I want to build a rifle not buy another one.

Well, you could find a Thompson Center barrel and build your rifle using it ... the Hawken and Renegade barrels are 1" in 48" twist.

The problem with compromise twists is that they don't do either very well. I'd go for the slow twist GM barrels.

If you're set on a 1 in 48" Don Stith might be able to help you. That is the normal twist for a Hawken and he sells the best.

Have to disagree with that statement! (Don't do either well)I have two Thompson's with the 1/48 twists and they do shoot either ball or conical well.Especially if someone with better eyes than mine are doing the shooting  Not saying the faster twist barrels won't shoot the conicals better at longer distances, or the longer slow twist barrels are better at longer distances, but out to 75-100yds the 1/48 will do the job purdy darn good. Me thinks!
