Long Knife
Red Heart
I highly recommend these books. They are epic novels, historically accurate, by James Alexander Thom. Mr. Thom sets history to a story format; as Dr. Crichton made Beowulf fun to read again with his novel Eaters of the Dead, so has Mr. Thom done with American history.

This first one is about Maconaquah (Little Bear; English name Frances Slocum). I have the book someplace and have read it twice; it was given to me by Grandpa Smith. 4.5/5 stars according to Amazon.

This second book covers the adventures of General George Rogers Clark (colonel at the time of his expedition). I have it also, and it was also given to me by Grandpa Smith. It is 5/5 stars according to Amazon, and is a very excellent, historically accurate novel with very few mistakes. I am currently reading it for the third time around, at least.
Better yet, neither costs a lot. They are extremely good values at the prices listed on Amazon.
Both are listed as "fiction" and should be read alongside non-fictional accounts by the serious study. However, they can most certainly stand alone for the person casually interested in American History and provide much more information than any high school and most college textbooks.
