...in a local gunshop.

Both are double barrel (over/under) and appear to be old originals.

1. Side hammers with both hammers on the right side, horozontal, one above the other. Lock has sparse engraving including letters, "U S C" and the date 188x. Full stock. Unfortunately, someone "cleaned" it down to the bare metal. Appeared to be about .45 cal.

2. This one I could only look at from over the counter. It had a conventional lock on the right side and another upside down on the left(?). I must be mistaken, but that's how it looked.

I might drive back (about an hour drive each way) and take some photos.
 
The first one sounds like a double barrel with twin mule ear locks (side slappers)? The second sounds like a swivel barrel double rifle. I have run across pictures and/or descriptions from time to time from private auction houses on the internet. Some of these auction houses seem to have a literal warehouse full of old guns.
