I'm working on this one right now!!! There's absolutely nothing to worry about. It's a "break through" from machining the hand channel.

No need to "send it back"!!! Lol

Mike
gosh dang. I seen that picture and took off to my gun safes. took my revolvers out and checked them lol. thanks Mike for giving me peace of mind. 👍 thanks bud

the pit is a smidgen less than 1/2" at its deepest part. just want to make I understand correctly. where exactly does it end and is there a shape/depth/end location that is acceptable?. rather ask a dumb question than not know.

Its an Italian BP Pistol and it comes wițh the territory, I have a couple USA Colt Single actions and if you seen the little imperfections in those you would Crap yourself, Nothing is ever the way we would like it to be especially from Taylor’s I have had words with them in the past.

sure think it's a handy place to collect more fouling.
Yeah, that's a doozy of a void thinking on it some more as it is actually above the chimney channel in the frame cheek where it should be solid steel. It's still not any where that would be a strength issue though.

well I lost my case with taylor's. they're just sending back the Whitney with the breakthrough imperfection in the frame. basically they said it wasn't a fatal flaw and was safe to shoot (as mr. 45 D already said). it's like having a car with hail damage. unhappy.

for the metallurgy guys her -
what I wanted to ask in all ignorance was:
could that breakthrough be filled with something like some type of solder or:
- even degreased and some grade of bismuth hammered in to fill it?

thanks

Sure, as long as you don't fill in the area behind where it broke through. That cavity behind the breakthrough was cut on purpose. It's where the hand spring rides. There's just a paper thin bit of metal in that area.

If it bugs you that much, why not file up to the break. I've got several guns where the notch is open nearly all the way to the top.

Honestly, it's not a void or flaw (even though it keeps being mentioned as). If you "zoom in", you can see what they should look like. It's totally open all the way.

hawkeye2 - yes the logical side of me agrees with you and other members who pointed this out. but I was just miffed about getting an old brood mare rather than the thoroughbred I was expecting.

To help maybe drive home a point, here's 3 Pietta shop guns -

You don't have an "old brood mare". Two days ago I took my Whitneyville and 1st Mod. to the range and both Dragoons shot 45C +p's just perfectly!! They are strong as an ox!!!

Mike

These are relatively cheap guns but they aren’t free either so it’s understandable that we want them to be closer to perfect. Not to mention they’re so different from modern arms most new users don’t really know what to expect from them. Thank goodness for guys like @45D and others who’ve seen thousands of these guns and can advise us as to what’s normal and what’s not.
