Hello all,

I've been considering using a pair of Remington 1858s for Cowboy action shooting. I just think it'd be a hoot to use some cap and ball revolvers for it. I'm thinking the Ubertis given their better reputation.

Any thoughts?

Any modifications or maintainence issues when thinking about this?

Thanks!

Well Ubertis are real nice, but so are the Piettas...either way you may consider the 5 1/2" bbl. If you think about conversions, the Uberti grooves are .460" w/.450" chambers maybe .458" at best. The Piettas are .450 groove with .445-.446" chambers....45LC are .452" dia. bullets.
Uberti $250 + Pietta $180. Or Euroarms formerly (ASP) Arm San Paolo... $190 same size frame as the original rems, .450" grooves .445" chamber and Uberti conversions fit them.
I got one a each so it's personal preferance. I do really like my 1858 Uberti won't tell you differant, but I like the others too all the best in their own way. Real partial to the ASP though, it's an old one.
If the price don't matter I'd say get them Ubertis.

Thanks Smokin' Gun!

I was wondering about those conversion cylinders, which one is the best to go with? R&D?

Do you want gated, drop-ins, or do you want to just port a drop in cylinder. If the last is your choice go with the Kirst, as you can port the shield part as you wouild the frame... Talk to Old Dragoon about that proceedure.
The R&D Drop-ins are nice but you have 6 firing pins and you'd have to leave a chamber empty if CAS allows you to use the R&D conversion. The Kirst has 5 chambers and a blank safety spot one firing pin. The gated R&D with ejector rod assy. is a beauty about $395 all together I think. Also you have to drill and tap the rear plate to the shield and buy the fixture...the Kirst goes pretty much right it... maybe some filing/ lite grinding.
Look at the sites for each and check it out. http://www.riverjunction.com/kirst/index.html http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?tabid=5&categoryid=10623&categorystring=10635***
