I just heard the news that the civil suit brought against the assault weapons manufacturer by the victims families of the Wash, DC sniper shooting has been settled in their favor...the gun maker has to pay 2.5 million dollars !!!!!

How can any justice system be so stupid!!!!
That's now a precedence...every shooting from now on will result in a civil suit against the gun manufacturer.

Gee, I wonder which radical left wing liberal democrats are behind the scenes on this one?
Kennedy? Clinton? Fienstein? Schummer?

I guess next that every death caused by a Chevrolet can now bring a lawsuit against General Motors!

How can a society deteriorate so rapidily as ours seems to have done for the past couple of decades...unbelieveable!!

:curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse: :curse:

Outrageous and it should be appealed. We need tort reform.

Just to clarify: Bushmaster agreed to pay about $500,000. The gunshop that sold the rifle agreed to pay $2,000,000, for a total of $2.5 mil.

I was so incensed at hearing the news that I may well have missed that distinction (assuming the news reported it right in the first place).

In either case, isn't it mind boggling that a group of average citizens could come up with such results? Somebody must have influenced them...you couldn't randomly pick that many stupid people all at the same time.

I don't doubt the stupidity of people. You could get that many stupid people together in place.

Cities have been losing these suits left and right. I think an appeal might lead to a different outcome.

If you had a car accident it surely could not be as a result of your own mistake or even drunkenness. You obviously must sue GM, and even Budwieser!

There should be a season on lawyers.

When I am done with this post I'm going to find Bushmaster Firearms Inc. of Maine and Bull's Eye Shooter Supply in Tacoma, Washington and ask how any company can cave to this outrageous stupidity. I will make reference to the message an agreement like this sends to all anti-gun advocates.

I was shocked to hear it myself. If only we knew what went on behind closed doors to get them to do that. I've dealt with Bullseye before and owned a Bushmaster but I can't imagine either of them volunteering to do that - must have been the lesser of two evils as in plea bargaining. Trouble is, they may think that gets them off the hook but there is no stopping the anti-gun folks once they smell blood. So to keep this from turning into a PPP ( prohibited political post ) I'll just hope Bushmaster and Bullseye provide their side of the story soon for their own good.

:agree:.....but

The bad news is the general public will never see/read that explanation...the news outlets have already covered it as "the lawsuit was won", and a fine / settlement was made, and that's how it's being perceived...plus it's already fading as old news so I doubt it'll ever be clarified for the public.

The test will be when it's tried to be used as a precedent in some future case...if it's truly as Bushmaster stated it, then it shouldn't be allowed

Unfortunatley, if you are sued and you agree to pay, the perception is that you have admitted wrong doing and have "lost" the case, even if it's not true.

You may be paying to avoid having to pay even more if it goes to trial, but most people will think - "Why would they pay if they were innocent"?

Sometimes you can't win no matter what you do, even if you're innocent. :boohoo:

Bushmaster said they had the case won easily with the evidence on hand. If that were the case, I would have let the plaintiffs press their case, then let them lose. That would send the message that gun makers aren't responsible for the criminal use of their products.

Bushmaster's desire to help the victims' families is admirable, but I don't think they realize they just made it so much easier for these type of law suits to happen, as well as giving gun owners in general an even worse image in the public eye.

And another absurbity is the negative implication towards the rifle as it was a "high capacity assault rifle...they're just made for killing large numbers of people, need to keep people from getting them".

Heck, he only fired one shot per event then snuck away...could have done the same thing with a scoped single shot .22 !

In a previous life as a Risk/Insurance Manager, I had a case where the insurance company settled a lawsuit against my instructions because it was cheaper than paying the attornies fees. Funny thing was that we could prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that we didn't have a vehicle within 20 miles of the place of the accident that entire day. Sometimes it isn't the "Company" that agrees to pay but the insurance company. If I remember correctly they paid, I switched insurance companies.
