I use three underlugs on a 42 inch barrel.

I typically use 3 on a 42 inch barrel.
Be sure to lay it out so that the underlugs and the tennons of the rod pipes don't hit eachother.

I use 4 on everything from 38" up to around 54".

I have only built one 42 inch barrel and used the diagram from TOTW and it had three.

Most of the guns I've built use photos of original rifles to go by.
From the pictures I have, most of them had 3 pins. One exception to this is most of the Bedford photos I have show 4 pins.
