I heard on the History Channel about Wild Bill that he unloaded and cleaned his Navies every day. Could be, I guess, he fired them but that was not the impression I got. How did he do this? If he did.

While I would think he fired them, I suppose its possible to drive the charge out using a thin dowel or brass rod without damaging the threads for the nipple (Remove the cylinder, remove the nipples, Drive it out)

TBH I havent a clue as Im not a history buff

While I doubt that he removed the bullets EVERY day by firing them out. He WAS a great shot and you don't become a great shot by not practicing a LOT. So to this ends I will say that MOST of the time he fired the projectile out but did not totally take apart his guns to clean them - swabbed the bore & cylinder chambers out then reloaded. My two cents :v .

Like most every other tale of the wild west, I'm'a speculate there might be just a dab of embellishment or exaggeration to the frequency with Wild Bill unloaded/loaded his navies.

Yup.
Considering we still can't find out what the 5th card was,, we all know two eights and two aces,,
Nobody knows because the original blood spattered cards have been sold to 500 different individuals.
(just like the Brooklyn Bridge)
The most famous chair in Deadwood today is in bar # 8, hanging on the wall is the only chair in Deadwood Wild Bill didn't sit in. :haha:
Every day breaking up fights and carrying out justice, practice shooting, cleaning, reloading followed by wild nights of gambling, drinking and whoring, followed by calmly sitting down, un-loading and re-loading your 2-36 cal pearl handled 1851 Colts,,
,,every 24hrs,,
365?

i've read from several sources that he'd carry his "morning" coffee to the edge of town and stick a playing card into a fencepost.....empty one revolver into it (usually hitting 2-3 times) reload with paper carts and snail capper (no mention of cleaning) place another card in the fencepost and repeat the process with the other revolver .......so he in theory never had both empty even with his .32 top break backup.

I agree, no one like Wild Bill would ever be caught with all his guns empty.

When I pull a ball (from an uncapped chamber) I use a drywall screw and a pair of pliers, no problem.

But with no internet it had to get boring? :blah: :rotf:

I never bought that story.

Ol' Bill was pretty wise to the fact that maintaining a reputation of having guns that never misfired and never missed helped him AVOID a lot of gunfights, and was pretty good at promoting himself, putting on shooting exhibitions for people who travelled around a lot, shared stories a lot, and wrote newspaper articles about remarkable things they saw other people do.
Once someone puts in the initial time and effort to develop very superior shooting skills, it does not take a lot of practice to maintain them at a superior level.

He apparently really was an excellent shot by all accounts, however.

Unless Bill wrote something down, its all guess and old west tall tails. My guess would maybe once a week. Every day-- find it hard to be.

Yep, a person can read anything they wish here.

What they read here is not always factual and substantiated by verified facts and footnotes.

Hunt when you wish.
