Unusual buck this weekend

Saw this guy feeding about an hour before sunset this past Saturday evening. Was able to get about 50-75 yards in front of him and setup behind a deadfall oak tree. He took about 10 minutes to work his way down to me, about 25 yards away giving me a broadside shot. Shooting offhand was able to shoot him behind the near shoulder, found the ball in two pieces in the off side shoulder.

I was shooting my TC Hawken .50, 80 grains 2F Goex, RMC Ox yoke over powder felt wad, 275 grain TC Maxi Hunter. He fell right where he was standing.

I took him because his antlers were so unusual. His right side looks like it was damaged while in velvet and tried to repair itself. This ends my season for year… very grateful to end it on a good note.

This is the first deer I’ve taken with this particular load using a TC Maxi Hunter. I was impressed with the way it took the deer down. In the past I’ve used round ball and patch ALOT and will still use that in the future. I started this year trying the TC Maxiball but did not like the fact there was basically no expansion. I had a spike earlier this year that was facing me when I shot it, the Maxiball entered in front of the left shoulder and lodged in the hide on the back side of the left hindquarter. It tore up a lot of stuff in between.

Even though the Maxi Hunter split into two pieces it still retained most of it’s original weight…

Nice deer , testicular damage can cause the antler on the opposite side of the damage testicle to grow differently or not at all . Some time it results in the antler forming a stack rather than a beam , this is known as a Peruke , which is an old English word for a wig . Google Peruke stag . Anyway a stag with deformed antlers is better out of the herd and in your freezer .

I saw a monster laying in the field the other day. He was just majestically looking around. I watched him with the binoculars. I'd never seen him in this area before. He was about 14 pts., rack about 2 feet wide, symmetrical and thick. Looooonnnng points ! He was Roman nosed, grey in the face, and from what I could tell, big bodied. A real survivor.

I love unique non-typical racks. If I see one in my area it becomes a goal to try to take it.

This buck had a 7" drop tine with two acorns on the right that unfortunately were broken off before I had a chance to take him, but the left side is the unique part. His skull was broken from the back of his head, around the pedicle and down through his eye socket and upper jawbone in some previous year. It had healed over with a black fibrous tissue. The event pushed his pedicle to face downward making the main beam grow down where it was broomed off. I had nicknamed him "Score 0"

Never heard of this Peruke thing before. Cool !
