I made some posts earlier in the year about the large bears killed in PA. Our bear season this year opened this past Monday and the kill was 2262 from the first two days with Weds kill not yet in. There is an additional week running in conjuction with the first week of deer season, in a big chunk of the state that has the most bears. So far, there has been 35 bears over 500 lbs recorded with 4 of those over 600 lbs. These are all estimated live weights as determined by Game Commision personnel using charts and tables. Last year saw 3 killed that were over 800 lbs each and quite a few more over 700 lbs. The mast crop in the state was bad this year, probably contributing to the kill of only "scruffy little 600 pounders". To read the press release go to Penna Bear Kill Press Release
