My brother flys model jets, and he used to mix his own jet fuel and part of the mix was castor oil. Since he stopped doing that a few years ago, sitting at my parents house is a whole unopened gallon of SIG Castor Oil. I was wondering if there might be some sort of use for castor oil in our BP hobby. They probably don't get castor oil from beaver castor glands anymore, so what is castor oil made from these days anyway ??

It's made from castor beans. It always was. I prefer olive oil, but if I could get it for free, I might use it.

Well, I doubt that there is any need anymore for THIS particular use of castor oil,but there once was!

Way back in the era of tall masted sailing ships when British sailors were allowed to take their wives/girlfriends on voyages, pregnant women ready for childbirth were dosed with castor oil then moved below decks to just right directly under a deck gun :winking:.The cannon was charged up and fired unexpectedly, and the sudden teriffic explosion just overhead coupled with the laxitive castor oil and BINGO!! Bowels were scared into premature action....labor was induced....and,well,you know the rest :haha:.

That's the origion of the old saying "I'll be a Son-Of-A-Gun" as taken from the nautical rhyme "Begot in the Galley,Born under the Gun,Every tooth a Marlin Spike, Every hair a Rope Yarn",etc.

Uh....that's the only use I know for the darn stuff :rotf:.

I made my wife drink 2 bottles when see was a month overdue with our first son.....it just gave her the runs. :winking:

Thanx all ....... I didn't know that was the same plant .... I know well about castor bean poison. It is extremely deadly and the KGB used it alot to kill people fast. Castor beans also make one of the poison powders used in WMD's on our Govt's watch list. That poison is called Ricin. I usually use bears oil for most of my applications ...I think I'll stick with that and leave the castor oil in their basement ....

Isn't it a primary ingredient in Moose Milk?

Yes it is.
Caster oil seems to be an excellent anti-rust oil.

I have several 40 year old model airplane engines which I left coated with Caster oil and they have absolutely no evidence of rust on any of their steel parts.

Although the caster bean is toxic, the oil is not.
Of course fecal matter doesn't seem to know this so if one consumes caster oil, it says "RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!" :rotf: :rotf:

I think you confused castor oil with "castorum" the scent fluid from a beavers scent glands (I think thats rite!) that was used by mountain men to bait beaver traps with ... definitely not he same stuff! :hmm:

BTW does anyone know where to get bulk castor oil for a resonable price? (Not Medical grade)

There's nothing deadlier to humans than ricin in the bloodstream, but castor oil is processed so there is none in the oil.

WalMart had it at about $1.70 or so for a 4 ounce bottle (about 9 months ago). It was in their Pharmacy section.

You know...They look at you real wierd when you buy 4 bottles of that stuff at one time.

Although they didn't ask, I had my answer all made up. It goes like this:

"WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ALL OF THAT CASTOR OIL?"
"I heard it will keep my bore from rusting!"
:rotf: :rotf:

Been using it on leather for 30+ years, especially saddle and tack - helps keep the critters (mice, rats, porcupines, etc.) from gnawing on it...........
