I was forced to use epoxy to install some small brass inlays and was wondering if any form of glue was used in the late 1700's by old time builders. I know small pins and screws were used for inlays but did they ever use glue? If so, what was the glue made from and did it have good adheasion qualities?

They often used hide glue, a gooey syrip made by boiling scraps of leather, horn, hoofs and cartlidge. It was used as both glue and filler to level inletting beds, even out sideplate mortises, fill gaps, reattach wood.

Contrary to popular belief, the old masters were not as concerned with perfection as we are today. They patched mistakes and sent them out the door. Many of the famous guns you study in the books have glue up repairs, sloppy inletting and scraper marks in the finish.

Auto body filler beds inlays well also.

They also used a glue made from pine pitch.. This stuff is tacky and expands and contracts as the wood does.. http://www.3riversarchery.com - look up natural pine pitch ..
These people are really nice to deal with.. they also carry hide glue.. basically you can use whatever you want, it's you're choice how accurate you want to be..some of the epoxies and glues now being made can work very well..
Small brads or screws can be also used..
Hope it helps..

If you want to use hide glue for a project go to Wal-mart and buy a box of unflavored Knox gelatin. Much cheaper than commercial hide glue and exactly the same thing just more highly refined.

A word of caution. Knox is highly filtered (it is food). It has lost most of the large collagen protein chains that make hide glue . . . glue. It will work for some applications, but is nowhere near as stong as true hide glue.

I am primarily a bow maker(fledgling gun maker) and have used a lot of Knox. For laminations I would rather use good old URAC-185.

One group of bow makers ran an in depth study of the tensile strength of different glue bonds. Everything from fish glue to epoxies. Knox, granular and liquid hide glue were compared with knox and regular hide glue being the same and liquid falling a little short.

The results of their test are published in the Traditional Bowyers Bible volume one.
