Is it safe to use a powder flask after the barrel has been purged by blowing all the smoke out from the barrel through the nipple?

I could not agree more with Hanshi and Claude.

Use a flask with a separate powder measure, so you don't have a bomb waiting to go off at the muzzle of a rifle.

I was told that once you blew all the smoke out, it was safe to use a flask. Apparently this was bad advice.

:cursing: Number one "NEVER BLOWS DOWN" a Barrel and "ONE DOES NOT LOAD FROM FLASK" direct to barrel always to a powder measure to load. NMLA has this noted in its rules on both accounts

. Who ever told you that had one hand or not cuz has definitely BS you never poor powder from a flask or a horn directly into the the boar ASAP you want hand grenade

There can always be an errant, hidden spark lurking in the breech no matter if you blow or not. ALWAYS use a powder measure. I do blow down the barrel after firing it; it clears the vent hole plus these guns can only fire ONCE without reloading and I know when I fire. Others have their own opinion on the subject and they are correct whatever their choice.

What's the problem with blowing down the barrel after you have fired? All the BP guys I shoot with do it.

There is a thread about a thousand post long on that. It is safe and can not cause a problem, but... It looks bad and scares the crap out of people to see. So... It's out lawed at a lot of events and ranges. When your on someone else's field you got to play by their rules.
You can always run a patch down and blow smoke out.
Still use a measure when ever, it's just good habit. I blow down the barrel except when scared people are around. Don't do it when it's not welcomed.

What happens if there is powder in the barrel and just needs that little puff of air to go off.????and you have the barrel in your mouth !!!!
Flask to muzzle loading, get you thrown off the firing line in some parts and band in some others.
If you do it and nothing bad happens,"No blood,NO foul..however if it goes bad,Lots of both,,Blood and Fouling all over the range and people around you,not the way to scare people, with your body parts scattered around.
We start life with an empty bucket of experience and one full of luck, the idea is to fill one before we empty the other.

You have just shot, so maybe you have an ember but no ball or charge. To blow your head off you have to have a ball and a charge that you blow alive thinking the gun is empty. However how do you blow past a patched ball, or a wadded ball or a wadded shot load. You play trumpet? I couldn't blow past a ball.
If your worried run a patch can't have a risk there.

Normally I stay out of this discussion. Blow down the barrel to clear it, or extinguish any possible remaining embers? Gosh, I thought that what a damp cleaning patch was supposed to do. :pop:

Why do guys want to go through the trouble of putting a dirty muzzle covered in soot and patch lube shpooz into their mouths to try to extinguish any burning embers when a swipe with a dry patch will do the very same thing? A quick patch swipe before loading each shot is not a bad habit to develop, tastes better, and doesn't look like you've had it with your career.

Blowing down the barrel is one of those loaded topics that will definitely start a heated debate from both sides. People are either for or against it and are pretty passionate on where they stand.

Last time this was brought up there must have been a zillion replies! The subject is definitely the spark that sets the powder off!

Respectfully, Cowboy
