USPS lost barrel

A cousin of mine borrowed my Renegade to hunt elk in Colorado. He was returning it via USPS and NOT knowing what it was worth only insured it for $200. It arrived missing the barrel due to box damage, or tore open by a sly one.
Two questions:
1. Has anyone ever had the USPS find a lost item or is it gone forever?
2. Where can I find a T/C replacement barrel or any other good barrel that does not cost an arm and leg?

I had 200 45 Colt casings sent to me last year and I received the padded bag that was empty. I contacted USPS and they promised an investigation. Nothing ever happened.
The nice person I bought them from took me at my word that someone at the USPS now has some nice casings, and he sent me 100 to ease the pain.

ebay you can find replacement TC barrels. I just bought an unfired never used barrel for Renegade that has 1 in 66 twist and say Roundball on it along with the 1 in 66 twist marked right on barrel. It is new never been fired and I paid a premium price for it though.....$378 to be exact without shipping. TC being out of business for traditional guns will make the price only go higher as more and more new ones are sold....

In 1983 that barrel cost $172 from Dixie, still have the receipt.

My oldest son shot back to back 50's in a Levi Garret Match with it.

They are good barrel's and finding a NIB is a treasure.

Go see your LOCAL postmaster and demand a replacement!! Demand to fill out a written loss report, and keep hounding them about it. Find out who your local postal inspector, and speak with him or her. I was getting only the cover of Boar and Boar Hunting magazine. I raised a stink and it quit happening. :idunno:

I recently had a problem with USPS. Online 'help' was no help. Went to the local postmaster, could not see him but was given a part time supervisor. Lazy, arrogant, bumbling, indifferent pile of bureaucratic used oats. :cursing:
Wrote letter to Washington, got a form letter response from local P.O. saying 'sorry'. That was it.

So far what they have said is exactly what Rifleman1776 stated. What an attitude an arrogance they show to the public, it seems to be the senders fault that the box was ripped open!

Had a box arrive a while back with the corner cut out of it specifically to expose the muzzle of a percussion revolver. It was obvious that the specific corner that was opened could only have been selected by the use of imaging equipment.

Not USPS but, I had UPS deliver a barrel to the wrong address. When I talked to the driver and found out where it was left I approached my neighbor and they had completely opened and removed the barrel. They must have thought that since it was heavy must be valuable. They returned it to me and asked what it is!

Only the barrel was missing from the box. The cardboard held the stock from sliding out the tore open end. Since it was only insured for $200 (goofy cousin mailed it) I would be lucky to collect half.

Package may not have been opened at all. I lost a .22 lr barrel due to poor packaging. I thought I had secured it very well but I found that ANY movement of the barrel can send it right out the end of a well packed tube. Best I've seen is a tightly packed tube with wooden ends screwed in place. Also tightly packed in pvc tube with ends glued AND screwed. Any movement works like a slide hammer...only a matter of time and motion.

I've hd USPS lose two books and two credit card bills and one water bill just this year...not the same as a barrel but post office is getting quite a reputation for screwing up and big time. Yell at the postmaster and demand an investigation from the area postal inspector...you might get some action, but I'm afraid it's rather an uphill fight against odds! Sorry. :idunno:

Make a complaint to the Postal Inspection Service. The postmasters want to keep things "quiet", while the Postal Inspectors are the postal "internal affairs". I had a flintlock go missing... on it's way to me, and started an investigation with them, and magically it arrived though broken (some nebish backed his postal truck into the box as it leaned against the loading dock - rubber marks on the box matched the rubber on a standard USPS delivery truck bumper), and they tried to hide it. You may not get your barrel but you never know if you're the lone problem or if they have an ongoing issue with one or more employees, and need more complaints to take disciplinary action.

I always send stuff priority mail 2 or 3 days. It may cost a bit more but the less time an item spends floating around the less it time it has to get damaged or lost. If you send stuff just regular mail to save a few bucks your taking chances it will get damaged. I just sent a shooting box to VA. 26 bucks priority vs 19 regular. I spent the extra 7 bucks to get it there in 3 days vs. 6 or 7 days by regular mail. If your (this goes for everybody) too cheap to spend an extra 7 bucks on something that costs a 100 dollars or more I have no sympathy for ya.
