While waiting for November 4th, I went squirrel hunting with a .28ga smoothbore Flintlock this morning...started out in a natural ground blind that overlooks a trail crossing at a big drainage ditch down in a bottom that I wanted to use for deer season, and thought it might be a good start for some squirrels;
1) A few minutes after first gray light, turkeys started flying down out of a roost tree about 50yds away...one got as close as 30yds and busted me in my orange hat...wouldn't have mattered as our turkey seson is in April;
2) a few minutes after that, I heard something in the leaves behind me and assuming it was another turkey, slowly turned my head around to look at it and spooked off a Doe & yearlings;
3) Half hour later heard a snort right behind me, turned to see what looked like a 4 pointer going away.
Figured I was sitting right in the middle of a travel corridor and knew I couldn't stay there for deer season, so before I left for the day, I scouted out and set up another natural blind about 50yds further off to the side of that little strip of hardwoods.
Never did see a squirrel but the trip proved valuable as it relates to deer season...
