Well P P I don't think there are any cons. The 20 ga. can be used to hunt small game or big game. Is the 54 realy a 28 ga.?? Where did you get that word from ( vascelating ) :winking: Rocky

Should have been........Vacillating. Spell Check FAILURE. :sorry:

Plus I have ZERO INTRESTING in Hunting anything. I buy my Meat at Safeway............... :blah:

...then, what are you going to use the gun for? Reenacting? What period and personna? Target work? Get a rifle. :winking: Seriously, if for example, you want a fusil de chasse, a lot were smaller guage than the 20s nearly everyone uses. The .54 would require less powder and lead of course. A friend of mine has a .50 smoothie which is really pretty but he hasn't been able to get it to group worth a darn....what are you looking for in this gun?

most of our answeres will be a bit biased , i have four flints .. 2 smoothies ,i rifle and i jeager ..all 62 cal . like the loads like the use of one bag one shot . however do have diff powder and atch combos. i guess it is what ever you like. Have never tried the 54 so can't help much with a conmparision.
good luck
ps
i think safeway uses 62!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway ahhh if your going just for target shooting i would be looking smaller and a rifle . if your looking for cool then i keep the lines of what ever smooth bore you chose but reduce the gage so as to get more bang for your buck so to speak . nice thing about the 54 is if you ever get a rifle you can also get it in 54 and thus have everything match

My understanding is .54 Cal/28Gage is more accurate than .62Cal/28Gage for Target/Plinking... :relax:

Don't know if you can say that? That is, the .54 more accurate than the .62? Probably depends on the weapon and the load. The .54 is probably more efficient in its load.

No, .54 isn't really 28ga., but it seems that .54 smoothbores aren't really .54 caliber either! I have a Jack Garner .54 smoothie on a T/C flint and its' bore measures .560", That's .010" over true 28ga. and 28ga. wads dang near fall down the bore. A .535" ball in .027" patch loads pretty tight. Can't say much about accuracy as I haven't had time to work much with it. First five shots went two inches at 25 yards with a .495" ball in two patches. Yeah, double patched a 50 caliber ball to fit a .56 caliber smoothbore, since I'd not had time to cast any .54's.
I think 20ga. probably makes a better shotgun, but for ball the 28ga. is plenty, especially considering the range limitations of a smoothbore. :imo: :results:

Heck, then you can save on ammo by getting the reuseable rubber suction-cup tipped kind. ::

The choice of caliber/bore matters little. Paper dies easy, and skeets can be peppered with an equal volume from either (but the shot column would likely be better/more compact in the larger bore.

The .54 is superbly accurate IMHO, and a LOT easier to find balls for. In a smoothbore it won't carry far enough without knuckling to justify the larger balls of the .62 (smooth rifle with sights?) You have the choice of cast or swaged (not so with the .62). Less lead, less powder, less recoil, more available firelocks. Seems a pretty straightforward choice to me.

Unless you just want to make big noise and big holes. Lots of guys in the Cordite Club (over .40 & over 4,000 ft lbs) never hunt but just like big guns.

It's a childhood maladjustment thing. ::

How about a nice .58?

My 54 Colerain smoothie is very accurate up to 50 yds (I haven't tried anything further) But a guy in the club outshoots any of us with his 62. I once saw him shoot a 50-3x off hand at 25 yds with it. I say either cal. if you buy quality, then it's up to the shooter to do his part.

I choose the 54 because it's less expensive to shoot, and I thought I could get more velocity with the smaller ball. As it turns out, my most accurate load at 25 yds is 48 grains of Chinese 3f!

PP, the only thing I can think of to add is barrel weight, the bigger the bore the lighter the barrel.

if you do any hunting at all i'd go with the .62 you can't beat it for an all around gun. i also use mine on woodswalks all the time. the more you shoot it the better you'll get.
scott fellows

If you an want accurate plinking gun, buy a rifle. .54 would do nicely, but .40 is the best plinking gun anywhere.

The smoothbore is designed for being a filler of diverse needs. Military musket with a big ball and could be used even for bear. Can be loaded with various sizes of shot for all sorts of hunting and skeet.

Maybe you do not want it for that reason, but these are the reasons that the guns exist.

Mine is a 20 gauge, but I also have an 11. I would not own anything smaller. Size does matter. <G>
