Vents

With all of the discussion regarding vents, I have been contemplating why anyone uses a liner anyway. I was thinking of making my current flint project by simply drilling and coning the barrel itself. I recognize that there will be a challenge in forming a good internal cone, but it figure that I can fashion some form of bit to pull with a Dremel and make a cone. If it does not work, I can always drill it all out and install a liner.

Any thoughts?

There's evidence the old guns were coned on the inside. As for me I'll stick with White Lightnin' vent liners. I know the Dutchman will disagree... :winking:

I have only installed two liners before, but will always from now on. It was so much easier than what you are describing. Both of the ones I did were "White Lightning" liners. I would think coning out the inside of a barrel would be do-able, but tough. Of course liners don't give the pc look though if that is a main concern. I think I can drill the hole, tap the threads and install the liner now in under 5 minutes.

Crack shot I've been drilling and coning the out side and ahve never had to cone the inside it, I have quite fast ignition, and fast lock time in all of my guns, but when they were out (some day they will), I'll get them lined with a white lighting. enjoy. bb75

I hear ya Mike. I think that the White Lightning liners enjoy a great reputation. This is one of those things that I just was thinking of trying.

Well, my thought is that I can mark, centerpunch and drill the vent. I can then fashion a tool to insert from the inside after simply removing the breachplug. This will allow me to insert this into a Dremel and pull rather than push to shape the inner cone.

True, coming up with the tool would be the hard part, but it would be a one time investment.
