I picked up a used T/C Hawken yesterday and the barrel is extremely dirty. Ther is some rust in the ignition channel under the nipple, but it doesn't look too bad. I have been soaking it with CVA Barrel blaster foam. Is there a better way to get the crust out?

Someone else might give better advice then I, but I had to buy a new barrel from Foxridge Outfitters for the one that I bought used.

I'm considering that too, but I'd like to save this one. I think I want a .54 either from Fox Ridge or GM.

If there is rust in the bore, take your cleaning jag and wrap some 0000 steel wool on it and run it down and up the bore a few dozen times while you have some foam in it, this will help work away any internal rust...

Yeh, what Musketman said then go shoot the bleep out of it with lead conical and patched balls clean it some more and then go shoot it some more. then clean and oil it real good and check it every other day or so cleaning and oiling if needed.

I don't know why this works it was suggested to me and I tried it on my old CVA barrel and it stopped the rust and all is good.

PB Blaster has a enzyme in it that actually eats rust. Never tried it in a rifle barrel, but it sure made a lot of old farm equipment usable around my place. :winking:

A pitted bore can still shoot accurately. Take care not to damage the muzzle but if you do, recrown it. Clean it up and see how it shoots before you decide to replace it.
