Has anyone purchased any of the black stripped pillow ticking from Walmart?I did and it works quite well.I don't have a micrometer yet,has anyone miked it?I would like to have a general idea to it's thickness.Best regards,J.A.

Not sure of the thickness of the black striped ticking, but I have bought and use the blue striped. New ticking has sizing in it (the shiny glaze you see on it), lots of members her (myself included) wash this out before using it.

I don't know the size of the black. Take your calipers down and check it out. The old gals in fabric go nuts when they see you with your calipers checking cloth..
I do not wash the cloth before cutting. I shoot the Wally World Blue Duc .024. I cut my patches with a drill press. The patch cuts better if not washed. I have tried these washed and not washed no difference. :shake:
I shoot a very wet patch H#9 Plus, if you are using a heavy grease like Bore Butter it may make a defference. :hmm:

The blue and white ticking I got at Wal-Mart mics at .018". Been using it for years. Seems that most of the Wal-Marts around here are closing their fabric section. Found some other ticking at different hobby/fabric shops, for when my Wal-Mart supply runs out.

As far as I know all of the ticking they sell is the same thickness, just different color. I use the red, blue, and plain ticking they sell and it all performs the same.

The thickness of ticking varies considerably, even within the same bolt of cloth. IMHO, each and every yard of fabric needs to be miced for best performance. However, variations of .001, or so, don't seem to make any difference in my gun, so buying several yards of fabric at once is the best bet. I usually buy at least 2 or 3 yards of fabric at each purchase, but I have a coupla better options, other than Waly World.

I recommend buying a micrometer, as opposed to a caliper, for measuring the thickness of patching. Mics seem to compress the fabric more uniformly, so the the mic provides a more precise reading of the true thickness of the fabric.

Cowpoke, your right!

My wife buys alot of fabric and notions from Walmart and in this area and I think everyway in the USA, after January 2009 there will be no more fabric department at Walmart!.. :shocked2:

Their probably going to make more room for more Chinese made junk!!

I agree with JD, I have three batches of blue stripe each of which is very slightly different in thickness, even tho they look alike. Unfortunately I cant remember where I got them, but at least one came from Joannes. Good smoke, Ron

It does vary. I used to buy .021" thick ticking, although .018" was also available. Then suddenly, all I could get was the .018". The last batch I bought (5 yards) was .021" and no .018" was to be seen. I would recommend getting as much as I could of it as the new WallyWorlds don't have fabric depts. and the old ones are phasing them out. I can still get some at Joanne's, but not everybody is close to one. :( And there's no guarantee that this store will be around forever.
