I am looking for a traditional stain to dye walnut a very dark brown to black like some traditional stocks. Any one try Aquafortis on walnut for a darker color?

I have read about lamp black and water, and asphaltum and may try some experiments on the wood to see what turns out. Might also try some vinegar stain, I have some brewing now. Should be ready in an month or two. Thanks, Matt

Yesm it will turn the stock as dark as you like. Here's one I did about 15 years ago with AQ

Oddly enough, walnut hull dye does a pretty good job. To make it, you'll need some ripe walnuts, the kind that are dark and oozing. Wear rubber gloves unless you don't mind dark fingers. Get about a gallon of water boiling and boil the nuts in it for about an hour. Top up the water as needed. Strain thru cheesecloth, add some denatured alcohol as a preservative and you're good to go.
I use the stuff on leather, cloth and wood.

Perfect, that is exactly what I was looking to do. I have some nitric acid and finally broke down and got a heat gun. The propane torch or gas stove always scares me.

How many coats was that? I might not take it quite that dark but pretty darn close. I think the dark walnut will really look good with brass furniture and the lock and barrel left white.

I read most English imported guns were stained very dark. Of course 200+ years can darken an original finish pretty well too

I have some walnut stain mulling out back so I will play with that some as well.

Very nice, Thanks

Mike: That sure is a nice Ebony stock you made there! :) Just funnin with ye. :)

Personally, I like to see the full rich brown color of walnut maybe with a little black burl thrown in for good measure, but...that's just me.

Here's where I get mine.
