I am looking into getting a new powder horn and found this company on line called www.powderhornsandmore.com. Their horns seem to be real nice. Has anyone dealt with these folks and what do you think of the quality of their powder horns? Would you recommend their stuff? Thanks.

if ya are handy enough in woodworking ya can make yerself a nice horn fer alot cheaper :v ..............bob

I just made my first horn this fall and was surprised how well it turned out. with a little time and with the help of a firend and Scott siblels book I had it done in less than a week. I did`nt do any scrimshaw
on it but it turn out real nice, buy a horn and make it yourself you`ll like it alot better

Those look like the run of the mill powder horns that you can find at any reenactment. Completely servicable, fairly nice looking.

I would suggest you just go ahead and either make your own or have a horner make you a custom one. The difference is something that you can use or something that you can pass on to your great grandkids. Price will be higher but in the long run you are better off.

I'd suggest getting in touch with Mike Small. I think he's a member here and makes wonderful horns for a fair price.

i'm not familiar with that company, but, have you considerede making your own. This is a link to my first attempt, http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showpost.php?post/288977/ , and it wasn't all that difficult to do. Granted, it is not like the fancy ones that you buy, but I made it and carry it with a lot of pride. Tain't to bad for a guy with not much art skills. The pic doesn't show any scrim work. Which I added later, but should have left well enough alone as I'm no artist.
Something to consider.

If you get a powder horn from this company how about a report on the horn and their service?

I normally pick up a couple of polished horns at gun shows for about $10 each. Look at different styles of horns and go to work. I like the F&I War period with carved spouts. I use my dremel tool and a few files. Seal the whole thing with a coat of bee's wax and you're done. You'll have a horn that suits your taste at a cost that is to everyone's liking, plus the satisfaction that you made it.

Making a powder horn is not at all difficult. Anyone who has the desire can learn to make very nice horns in a relatively short time.

This page gives full instructions; http://www.nmroyalrangers.org/FCF/making_a_powder_horn.htm

Run a search on powder horns, or some such, to find examples of nice designs you might want to make.

Snag,
That's nice work for a first attempt.

Search the web, or look at Track of the Wolf's web page to look at original horns, or reproductions of original horns, to learn more about design features on those old horns.

IMHO, you have the ability to do nice work. A little research and some practice and your horns will look like the old ones.

Norseman, the company that your inquiring about is owned, operated and hand crafted by a gentleman who owned a well known black powder leather hunting pouch and possibles bag company for well over 20 years in the western us and was sold 2 years ago, he relocated due to health problems, be advised that he does top notch work with quality materials.

Thanks Beaverman. That's what I wanted to hear. Since I am not much into making powderhorns and just want a nice one, I thought the price was fairly good.
I have one of those cheapo CVA kind thats just gotta go. :rotf:

Your welcome, if you want, contact John and give him a call and talk to him so you get exactly what you want, a very nice man with a great sense of humor, I have purchased several unfinished horns from him in the past and have never been disappointed, tell him ol Beaveman sent you!

Norseman:

I ordered two horns over the Internet last week and got them both via USPS yesterday. Not bad for a Christmas weekend. No problems at all, and the horns appear well made and worth the money. I would order from them again.
