Thinking about unscrewing the brass sling stud on a couple of TC Hawken rifle stocks, and would want to plug the holes in the best looking way possible.

Other than the standard practice of using some sort of wood filler...was wondering if anyone knows of a large brass flat head screw or something that might fit a typical size sling stud hole and look decent (TC Hawken has brass trim)...or maybe a tube of some sort of brass colored paste that could be squeezed in then harden up?

Roundball,
You could look at a hardware/home improvement store to see what they have in single slot brass screws. The Home Depot chain we have here has a good selection of brass wood screws and machine screws. You could also do a brass inlay of some sort.

i'd try to set it up to drill a hole on a drill press to say 1/2" dia. bout 1/2" deep and glue a oak dowel plug in there and finish it off to the contour of the stock then oil seal it with some stock finish :v ...........bob

I would do similar to White Buffalo's idea above, but use brass, horn or antler as the filler.

Why?

Why not?

I would then engrave my initials into the smooth surface.

I would make a brass plug to go into the hole.

But what would be better, is to add a brass toe plate to the stock long enough to cover the hole.

How about making a little silver flower, with a screw in nipple or vent pick, with a knurled and decorated head on it?

when drilling for dowels always use spur bits, and practice, practice, practice, on a like board with similar grain going in similar direction.. i think you will be dissapointed if you use a std dowel size and standard bit size as they will not fit well most of the time.. you could take a a matching wood inlay off the inside of the barrel chanel or brass lock plate, and glue the smallest piece possible into the surface of the hole. fill the bottom of the hole with another same type plug from a board so you dont need much of a cover plug, maybe 3/16 inch thick is all on the surface... i like the silver design idea.. take an old 50cent peice and start cuttin with a jewelers saw untill you get someting you like..or check track to see what they have already made... then lamp black it over the hole and slowly inlet it.. if the surface is curved then you may need to bend an old quarter.. im getting in too deep here for me i guess.. better ask more questions :hmm: .. dave

i agree with robert58 fit a toe plate i did on my 50cal looks good.

Always liked the looks of the buttplate/toeplate on a TC Seneca...wished they had continued that up into the larger Hawken models

Bill, the only correct way to fix that hole is to send the complete rifle to me & let me fix it. I may have to shoot it a bit while it is line for repairs as I wouldn't want the lock or trigger to gald up or the dirtdobbers to fill the bore, but I promise you Will get it back as soon as I am done with it...... well, in a year or 5......... :rotf:
