Ok folks is there a website that explains strap weaving and materials. Thought I might give it a try. Thanks Boon

I have seen plans and instructions for building and using an inkle loom for making straps. If you google "inkle loom", you should be able to find it.

Most American straps were leather.

The woven straps were mostly linen. The Canadian/Native style is braided yarn (my grandma taught me this style), and there are a few finger woven and wampum straps known.

The inkle straps made of wool yarn are mostly a reenactorism. They are very easy to make with any kind of inkle loom, tape loom, etc. Set up your pattern of stripes, and make your warp about 1.5 times the finished length. For "dashes" just alternate yarns, like white blue white blue white blue.

This weaving is warp faced, so you have to pull the weft tight so it doesn't show.

I posted a tutorial about 1 1/2 yrs back in the craftsman section....search for "card weaving"
might also find it by searching topics by me in the members section.

Thanks all just what I was looking for. Thank you Brett for the link and spending the time to share your knowledge. Boon

Here's a link to directions for finger weaving: I'm not sure about horn straps, but there are many surviving Native American items created with this technique.
