My daughter, beaded a really nice weeping heart for a possibles bag. Made me wonder, what is the significance of the weeping heart? I have one in the blade of a hawk. What does it mean, or where did it come from?

I remember reading that the design is an ancient Christian symbol that denotes the "Fifth Wound of Christ" (the piercing of his side). I believe it was also used in the 16th century in Europe on some military equipment (by the French?), but I don't have any documentation I can site.

It could be that the Natives saw it and it became a poplar design on trade items.

I don't know where it came from, but it is my favorite design for inlays, horns, and bags.
I won a bag at a shoot many years ago with a weeping heart inset into the flap and I wouldn't trade it for a farm in Georgia.
