Hello,

Is there a welding rod that I can use that a mapp gas torch will get hot enough to weld? I am hoping to get something that will blue with the rest of the metal. I have thought of using a brass rod and then using brass black on the weld after I blue. Is there a type of silver solder that will work for this? Any suggestions?

Thanks

First off what are welding? Adding on to a tang?, trigger guard? butt plate? Barrel lugs, barrel under ribs, sights are attached using solder.

Brownells sells 3 1/2% nickel steel welding rod that will blue, but you'll need an oxy-acetylene set or a tig welder to use it.

IMO, brass will stick out like a sore thumb, even if it is treated with a blackening solution.

The real problem is that in order to use any steel you have to have a torch that can create a temperature that will actually melt the steel.

As steel melts at temperatures over 2400 degrees F, that takes a LOT of heat. Far more than can be made with a typical propane style torch, even if it is made for using MAP.

Bernz-O-Matic makes a MAP/Oxygen torch kit that can weld steel as long as the thickness of the material is less than 3/32 thick.

This kit by the way is somewhat similar to an oxyacetylene torch in that you have to adjust the oxygen flow to get the proper flame.
You also will need some welding goggles or some almost black sunglasses (if you can find them).

The torch eats oxygen like there is no tomorrow so the oxygen tanks don't last very long.
They also cost around $10 each which makes this a pretty expensive thing to use.

My "kit" came with a tank of oxygen, a tank of MAP, a plastic tank holder, the torch with about 4 feet of hose, a lighter and some very thin steel, brass, bronze and silver solder wires.

If cost is no object you can follow this link
Bernz-O-Matic Torch

As I own one of these and have used it on several occasions I can say that it does work.
Is it easy to use? No. Not on thick metal.

Hope this helps answer your question. :)

I am going to attempt to build a Hawker Pattern Musket Underhammer rifle (Or at least something using the design). It is illustrated in the underhammer Guns book page 174. In this unit the triggerguard as well as the base to the spring is one piece. There are alot of cuts and corners on it so with My skill level I would only be able to weld up something like this. None of the welds will be stress welds.

Thanks
