What practical accesory can I make with the leg and thigh bones from a 26# domestic bird?
Looking for ideas if you have any.

They should make great powder measures, since their bones are hollow. I think I have heard of this being done.

The wing bones can make turkey calls. The heavier leg and thigh bones, depending on size, can be used for decorations, as in a boned necklace, or the handle for a small patch knife, or for a powder measure, as suggested. You will want to protect those fragile bones with several coatings of either an epoxy, or polyethelene, or a good stock finish with driers in it. If you just let them dry out, they becomes to brittle, and will crack or split at the first bump. Remember that bird bones are hollow, and carry the blood supply. Deer leg bones are often used for handles and measures because they are much thicker, are not hollow, and have a heavier grain structure. But even they need to be protected from drying out and cracking.

Make a flute out of the leg bone, Brett. Flutes are some of the oldest musical instruments, dating back 20,000 years or more and were typically made from animal bones.
History of the flute

The oldest playing musical instruments are flutes found in China, and dating some 9000 years ago. They were made from the wing bones of cranes.

Just think Brett, make a nice flute and you could entertain us around the barrell fire inbetween shoots. :winking:

Wing bone turkey calls are easily made with a saw, pine pitch and some experimentation.

Be careful where you put them though as they are quite brittle and easily crushed.
