I showed a heavy barreled half stock gun to a friend who indicated it was an original chunk gun. It certainly is a chunk of metal, about 1&3/8 barrel thickness, 62 cal. barrel is 40 inches long. Weighs about 30 lbs. But what makes it a "Chunk" gun? I have shot it at 100 yds and it groups darn well considering it is a 62. Had two 5 shot groups under 1.5 inchs, with open sights.

Chunk gun means it's not meant to be an offhand rifle, but rather to be shot "over the log" or resting on a "chunk' of wood. Most of the matches these days are shot at an X-center target.

If you've ever seen the movie Sgt. York there is an over the log or chunk gun match in the movie.
